RETROPERITONEAL ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION

RETROPERITONEAL ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION

FINDINGS:               An ultrasound examination of the retroperitoneum shows the right kidney to measure 13.4 x 7.0 x 6.9 cm.  The left kidney measures 13.7 x 6.7 x 6.0 cm.  No solid or cystic lesions are seen within either kidney and there is no evidence of nephrolithiasis.

An ultrasound examination of the bladder shows an irregularity of the posterior bladder wall measuring 1.8 x 1.6 x 1.8 cm.  The question arises as to whether this is a mass associated with the posterior bladder wall or is secondary to prostatic enlargement.  A previous CT examination of 06/29/2009 suggested the prostate at the upper limits of normal for size.  A pelvic MRI would appear to be indicated, as we are unable to differentiate a posterior bladder wall mass from prostatic impression on the posterior bladder surface.

Incidentally noted is a small stone within the bladder measuring 1.0 x 0.8 x 0.9 cm.

IMPRESSION:
1.                   Questioned posterior bladder wall mass versus intrusion of the prostate upon the bladder.  A pelvic MRI is suggested for further evaluation of this finding.
2.                   Small calcific density seen within the bladder.

Thank you for the referral.
