BILATERAL BREAST ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION

BILATERAL BREAST ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION

INDICATION FOR STUDY:         Right breast pain, nipple region.  Palpable mass, retroareolar region.  Mammogram from 02/16/2012 showing poorly marginated mass in the retroareolar region of the right breast.

FINDINGS:             The right and left breasts were studied in a clockwise fashion.  In the right breast, there is an area in the retroareolar region measuring 1.8 x 0.8 x 1.3 cm.  On the left, there is actually a similar area in the retroareolar region measuring 1.6 x 0.7 x 1.4 cm.  The significance is somewhat uncertain.  These areas do not appear well circumscribed.  They do appear solid in nature.  It is unusual that they are bilateral.  If there is any further concern, surgical consult may be considered.  The patient I understand has had a previous MRI evaluation, which was performed in May of 2009, which showed increased edema in the retroareolar region of the left breast.  Once again, the significance of these changes in the breast is uncertain, but would recommend surgical consult or further evaluation as needed.

BI-RADS Clinical Assessment Category 0:  Would recommend further evaluation as discussed.

Thank you for the referral.
