MRI EXAMINATION OF THE RIGHT HIP WITHOUT CONTRAST

MRI EXAMINATION OF THE RIGHT HIP WITHOUT CONTRAST

FINDINGS:             There are degenerative changes and degenerative cystic changes noted especially at the acetabular region somewhat towards the anterior aspect superior to the femoral head.  There are also changes noted in the femoral head, which appear to represent degenerative changes, degenerative joint disease, and subtle degenerative cystic change seen anteriorly.  There are no significant changes to suggest avascular necrosis.  There is joint space loss.  There is no fracture or dislocation.  The ligaments and tendons appear intact and there is no significant change to suggest complete tear.  At the region of the greater trochanteric posteriorly, there is subtle strain to the attachment, but once again no significant tear, but the possibility of a subtle partial tear and strain appear to be present.  This is seen on images 14 and 15 of series 4.  The changes in the femoral head appear asymmetric compared to the left, which are seen on the coronal images.  The possibility of contusion in the femoral head cannot completely be excluded.  The remainder of the signal changes in the bone marrow showed no gross abnormality.

IMPRESSION:        Degenerative cystic changes noted in the acetabular region as discussed.  In the femoral head, there is an area of contusion versus degenerative joint disease and possibly other degenerative cystic changes.  There is also a partial strain of the attachment near the greater tronchanteric region posteriorly.  There is no evidence of fracture or joint effusion.  Please see comments above.  There are no prior examinations at this facility for comparison.
